|Dates of Creation||1903 - 1917 (bulk 1910-1915)|
|Scope & Content||
This collection contains 474 bills and receipts from various commercial establishments, to Edward Henry Holden or his wife Mrs. Mary Anstiss Thayer Holden. The bulk of the bills come from Bennington, Vermont, North Adams, Massachusetts, and Troy, New York. A small number are from other nearby towns and cities. They cover the years 1903-1917.
While not a complete collection the more detailed record groups established are the receipts for clothing, food, telephone, and utilities. Other record groups of note are medical, membership and subscriptions, beverages, and coal and livery. The collection is noteworthy not only for the items purchased and their cost but also because it provides some details on the stores, names of proprietors, and addresses of early twentieth century merchants in Bennington, Vermont and the surrounding area. The collection does not include the reasons for why the purchases were made or their usage.
|Administrative/Biographical History||Marian Holden MacLean noted her particular interest in various bills including a bill for Robert Holden's tonsillectomy from Albany in 1912, a nursing bill in October 1912 for the birth of the future Mrs. Anstiss Holden Eldred, and the piano lessons for Mrs. MacLean although she claimed she never learned how to play any instrument.|
