Small diary of Edward Wigglesworth describing the Arnold Expedition after the Battle of Quebec. Dated Oct. 17, 1776 Ticonderoga and includes entries through 1776 and 1777. Includes various lists of expenses and payments made to soldiers and for equipment as well as some narrative entries (Oct. - Dec. 1776) . The narrative includes a detailed description of the Battle of Valcour Island on Oct. 11, 1776. Wigglesworth was aboard the row galley "Trumbull " also known at "Schuyler", which escape destruction by the British, landing at Crown Point after the battle. |

The diary opens in October of 1776 when Benedict Arnold had command of the American forces at Fort TIconderoga. After the Battle of Quebec, and subsequent loses during the attempted invasion of Canada, the American forces had fallen back to Fort Ticonderoga in June of that year. The diary follows the engagements, paricularly the Battle of Valcour Island and its immediate aftermath, as well as activites of the continental forces in the northern area such as Lake Champlain and Fort Ticonderoga as they fought the British. Wigglesworth (1742-1826) was from Newbury Port, Mass. and was commissioned as Captain of the Massachusetts Montrosses on June 29, 1776. He became Colonel of the 6th Continental Regiment in July of 1776 and later Colonel of the 13th Massachusetts Regiment in January 1777. |
