Title H.T. Cushman Collection
Creator H.T. Cushman Manufacturing Company
Dates of Creation 1894-1964
Scope & Content The Cushman Company collection consists primarily of printed catalogs and other promotional materials. Most of the material concerns Cushman Colonial Creations, the company's most famous product line, which was introduced in 1933 and remained popular into the early 1960s. There is, however, one early catalog from 1894-95 together with some advertising material from the same period, and several catalogs for the company's popular line of smokers in the 1920s. In addition to annual catalogs and price lists, there are specialized brochures and booklets describing particular lines of Cushman Colonial Creations, providing decorating advice to consumers, and promoting the Old Stone House in North Bennington as a showcase for Cushman furniture.
Administrative/Biographical History The H. T. Cushman Manufacturing Company of North Bennington, Vermont was founded in 1886 by Henry Theodore Cushman (1844-1922) to manufacture household furniture accessories, such as coat and hat racks. The company began making mission style furniture in 1901 and by the 1920s was a highly successful manufacturer of smokers and of breakfast sets. It also began making reproductions of colonial furniture in the 1920s, but struggled against many other competitors for this market. In 1933, however, Cushman introduced Cushman Colonial Creations, a new line of colonial style furniture designed by Herman DeVries. It featured rounded edges and a reddish maple color and proved to be very popular. It was the company's trademark line for three decades. In 1964, the H. T. Cushman Manufacturing Company was acquired by General Interiors, which owned several other furniture manufacturers. In 1971 the company's North Bennington plant was sold to Green Mountain Furniture, which did not acquire the Cushman name. Green Mountain closed the North Bennington facility in 1980.
