Title Town Records
Dates of Creation 1755-1925
Scope & Content A collection of documents containing early town materials, including early New Hampshire charters and the conflict with New York. Much of the material dates to the period before Vermont became the fourteenth state in 1791. Material includes tavern keeper applications, tax information, land auctions, promissory notes, land surveys, etc.
Administrative/Biographical History Town materials provide insight into early land transactions, especially those earliest land auctions to recover taxes from early proprietors who failed to pay their tax. Other procedural insight is gained from the recommendations to the county court regarding residents considered responsible enough to run a tavern. The promissory notes served as a form of currency or exchange that could be used to settle debts and purchase items in a cash-poor economy.
