Administrative/Biographical History The First Vermont Turnpike Corporation was chartered in November 1796 to build a turnpike from the east line of Bennington to the east bank of the Deerfield River in Wilmington. No work was done under this charter and a second company, the Windham Turnpike Company, was chartered on November 1, 1799. This company took over the route of the First Vermont and lasted until ca. 1828.

The Green Mountain Turnpike was first chartered on March 10, 1797, allowed to lapse, and was rechartered in 1799. This company survived until about 1832 and ran from the east line of Clarendon to the Connecticut River bridge in Bellows Falls.

The Windsor and Woodstock Turnpike was chartered on November 5, 1799 and ran from Windsor to the Woodstock courthouse, probably through Hartland, Vermont.

The Stratton Turnpike was chartered November 10, 1808 and ran from the Stratton meetinghouse to Newfane.

The Peru Turnpike was chartered in 1814 and expired in 1913. It ran from the Lovel farm in Peru to the Manchester courthouse. Built by General Peter Dudley it lay on the easiest pass through the Green Mountains. It was the only Vermont turnpike to ever collect tolls from automobiles.
