Title Hall-Cushman Family Papers
Creator Hall Family
Other Creators Cushman, Henry Theodore
Dates of Creation 1786-ca. 1930
Scope & Content This collection consists of records, chiefly correspondence, of Hiland Hall and his family and Civil War and business records of Henry T. Cushman.

The Hall family correspondence is mostly letters to Hiland Hall from his wife Dolly, two sons (Henry D. Hall and Nathaniel B. Hall), and Martha B. Hall (wife of Nathaniel B. Hall). There are two folders of letters by Hiland Hall, mostly to his wife Dolly and son Henry from 1838 to 1841 when he was serving in the United States House of Representatives. Henry D. Hall's early letters to his parents are written from Fayetteville (Newfane), Vermont. Later letters to his father concern family, business, and local affairs. Letters to Henry D. Hall are sympathy letters on the death of his wife Caroline Thatcher Hall in 1899. Nathaniel B. Hall's letters to his father from Jackson, Michigan, where he moved in 1870, concern business matters; and his letters to Henry D. Hall discuss the death of Hiland Hall, the settlement of his estate, and other family news. Martha B. Hall's letters to her mother-in-law and father-in-law are chiefly concerned with family news, but an 1882 letter to Caroline Thatcher Hall concerns their diverging religious views. There is one folder relating to the estate of Hiland Hall, consisting of correspondence of Henry D. Hall and Charles Hall as well as receipts relating to the settlement of the estate. Other materials include the will of Charles Thatcher, father of Caroline Thatcher Hall; property records, including deeds and leases mostly to Henry D. Hall regarding property in North Bennington and Bennington (including an 1890 deed for the Stark House); and records of pledges of money for various efforts to fund activities of the North Bennington Congregational Church. There are also bundles of receipts for routine household supplies purchased by Hiland Hall, 1855-1864 and 1883-1885, and by Henry D. Hall, 1892-1903. Many of the Henry D. Hall receipts relate to payments on behalf of the North Bennington Congregational Church. A folder of receipts and promissory notes, 1786-1850, includes documents related to T. W. Park and H. H. Hall, but most bear no apparent connection to the Hall family.

The Civil War records of Henry T. Cushman are reports he filed during his service as a quartermaster in the Fourth Vermont Infantry from early 1863 through September 1864. The business records of Henry T. Cushman include a file of correspondence from 1883 with the Joseph Dixon Crucible Company concerning erasive rubbers manufactured by Cushman and sold to Dixon. The letters discuss the quality of the erasers and the trouble Dixon was having in selling them. Another folder contains patent documents issued to Henry T. Cushman for a paper polisher, improvements to erasers, pencils, mucilage holders, and stocking darning lasts; and one patent to Hassan U. Allen of North Bennington for improvement to fruit jars. There is also a short, typewritten history of the H. T. Cushman Manufacturing Company, probably dating from the late 1920s.
