Jedadiah Dewey Ledger - Dewey, Jedediah (1794-1864)

Ledger with tan covers. On the outside front cover, written in ink - "Dewey's One Book, 1845". The first page, has listing, dated June 1845 and is headed "Jedadiah Dewey". On the last page, upside down from the front page, "J. Dewey to J.P. Goolfrey, for construction work, shingles, nails, flooring, bulk lime, etc. Ledger also includes names of people to whom Dewey paid money.

A group of Dewey family documents - 139 pieces in all. They cover approximately. 120 years, from 1769 to 1924. The bulk of the collection is the various legal documents including leases, deeds, bills, contracts, accounts, estate appraisals, in addition to a copy of Eldad Dewey's Will and Probate Records. The documents bear the names of many Dewey family members such as Eldad, Charles E., Elijah, and Jedediah, as well as those of many area families. Dewey cash book. On first page in ink: "Cash Book of J. Dewey and Co.; August 30th 1858." And below on same page: "Composed of J. Dewey, C.E. Dewey, and E. Dewey." Presumably Jedediah, Charles Edward, and Elijah Dewey. Entries reflect incoming and outgoing cash transactions. Typical entries include credits for labor and debits for candles, nails, kerosene, and ochre. Approx. 2/3 of pages used.

Regimental orders from Colonel Henry Robinson to Captain Jedediah Dewey, captain of the fourth company, first regiment. Hand-written orders Dewey to assemble his men on January 8 and to fill the position of Aaron Robinson who had resigned. Dated December 23, 1823.

Snuffbox which belonged to Jedediah Dewey. Black lacquer, of irregular, shell-like shape with raised, gray decoration on hinged lid, which snaps shut.

Empire style writing desk and arm chair. Made of walnut. Sits on casters. Back rest is upholstered and padded with seat cushion to match. Evidently re-upholstered with wide-ribbed corduroy in brown and golden stripes. Legs and arms have turned spindles. ca. 1850 or later. Writing desk is removable (attached to arm by wooden nut and bolt). May have belonged to the first minister of the Old First Church, Reverand Jedediah Dewey. Style would fit genealogically the fifth Jedediah Dewey (1794-1864) of Bennington, Vermont, son of Eldad and Mary Tilden Dewey.
