Admitted to the bar in 1827. Fire at his home in January 1830. Vermont delegate to the Democratic National Convention 1848. State representative, 1832-1833; state senator 1838-1839. Vermont Governor, 1853-1854. Because he did not receive a majority of the poular vote he was elected by the legislature after twenty-six ballots. Died of a stroke in 1860 at Charleston, South Carolina while attending the Democratic National Convention. |
