Scope & Content |
This collection of papers of the artist Marie Haines Burt contains various works of art and personal papers produced and retained by Burt over her life. The collection is divided into two series: The first contains sketches in various media - pastel, crayon, watercolor, etc.; and background/study material on her artistic subjects - photographs, news clippings, etc. This background material is generally foldered with pertinent preliminary sketches, studies, workups, etc. Subjects include landscapes - the American southwest and Vermont, architecture - Galveston roofs, animals - guineas, squirrels; and people. Also included are several stencils created by Burt, such as one for a Christmas card. In contrast to the first, the second series contains predominantly textual material such as correspondence, news clippings, clippings on other artists (including Edward Hopper), and ephemera, - museum brochures, organizational pamphlets, membership cards, etc. |
