Group of documents related to LeRoy Williams pertaining to his work for the museum in creating several paintings: "Prisoners Taken in the Battle of Bennington," "Co. Frederic Baum and Col. Francis Pfister..." and "Thomas Jefferson and James Madison..." Correspondence files contain a large amount of letters sent from Spargo to Williams on the paintings as well as letters from Spargo to various experts seeking information on Native American dress during the period being protrayed. Group also contains two folders of sketches and studies produced by Williams in the creation of the above paintings. Several folders contain miscelaneous items such as newsclippings and research files on Williams. Also a book of "Uniforms of Troops Worn at Battle of Bennington (from Col. Leffert's book)." Contains descriptions and watercolor sketches of men in uniform. |

LeRoy Williams created mural and history paintings as part of the WPA in the 1930s. He was commissioned to create paintings that captured Vermont life. Williams studied at the New York School of Art and the Arts League and continued to paint throughout his life. He created several works for the Weston Playhouse as well as the Farrar-Mansure House both in Weston, Vermont. John Spargo commissoned Williams to create several paintings for the Bennington Museum including "Prisoners Taken at the Battle of Bennington"; "Thomas Jefferson and James Madison/Bennington June 1791" and Lt. Col. Frederic Baum and Col. Francis Pfister" Starting in 1943 Williams for the National Survey in Chester, Vermont making maps until his retirement in 1956. |
