This includes nine documents and history relating to the sale of two tracts of land in the area of Vergennes which includes Otter Creek, calling into question the ownership of the land by Ethan Allen et al.: (numbers do not correspond to numbers on the documents) 1. a vellum copy of an indenture dated 1732 in which several Mohawk chiefs grant land to John Henry Lydius; 2. certified copy of letters patent granted by Massachusetts Governor William Shirley in 1744 confirming the transfer of the land in 1. to Lydius; 3. a sworn 1765 affidavit of Benjamin Giles stating the results of an interview with Governor Shirley respecting the land; 4. an original conveyance whereby Lydius sold part of the land to Joseph Ells in 1781; 5. a certified copy of 4. above; 5. an 1783 indenture by which Joseph Ells sold the land to Francois de Block, with a certificate by the Lord Mayor of London; 7. Copy of 6. made at Ostende; 8. Certified copy of the above indenture; 9. A 1788 indenture in which Francis de Block sells the land to Abraham Van de Boor. |
Administrative/Biographical History |
Members of the Allen family and close relatives invested heavily in land in the Otter Creek area after 1765. The deeds and material in this folder strongly suggest the land may have been purchased under earlier titles pre-dating the French and Indian War. |
