The records consist of a number of documents related to the Blackmer family, their interaction with the local community, and items of interest. Family records include Samuel H. Blackmer of Shaftsbury's handwritten music book, invitations and programs to various family members commencement ceremonies including Bennington High School in 1888 and Hotchkiss School in 1920 with handwritten commencement speech notes, along with invitation cards to local parties. A number of legal documents may be found including Warrantee (Deeds), Quit-Claim Deeds, Court House Subscription Lists, and a receipt for Horseshoes. Documents related to the local community include a number of historical ceremonies from 1934 Centennial Service and Dedication of Saint Peter Window at the Saint Peter Episcopal Church and the 1906 Centennial Services at the Re-Dedication of the Congregational Meeting House. Documents the family has kept include a double folded page from the "The World Magazine" titled "The Great War Message of President Wilson" in color and a Burlington Free Press article discussing an editorial by Frank E. Howe in the Bennington Banner and his possible German sympathies. Of note in the collection is a letter from Millard Fillmore to A.P. Lyman P. Isham and S.H. Blackmer explaining his inability to attend the convention of Republican Whigs of Bennington County on the Anniversary of the Battle of Bennington. Included in the letter is Fillmore's feelings for the area, discussion of politics, and a message to the Whigs of Bennington. Another document of note is a letter written by George W. Robinson, Crusoe House, to a group of ladies inviting them to scale Mount Anthony. A Legal 1833 handwritten copy of the Town of Pownal is also found in the collection. |
