Series related to the Battle of Bennington Centennial Celebration. The papers were mainly produced by or for the Bennington Battle Monument Association and other historical associations including the Vermont Centennial Commission, the Bennington Historical Society, and Saratoga Memorial Association. The papers include the Bylaws of the Bennington Battle Monument Association, bills sent to and from the Bennington Battle Monument Association, ledgers, checks, tickets, and commemorative items and souvenirs related to the Battle of Bennington Centennial Celebration. In addition to a large number of letters involving the planning of the Celebration including communication with various vendors. The majority of the items were either sent or received by Colonel Olin Scott. A number of New England Governors were invited to be members of the Bennington Battle Monumnet Association and some of their correspondence regarding the Association is included. |
Administrative/Biographical History |
In 1876, the Vermont General Assembly passed an act establishing the Bennington Battle Monument Association as an outgrowth of the Bennington Historical Society. The organization sought to erect a monument at the site of storage supplies sought by British forces at the Battle of Bennington. |
