Administrative/Biographical History |
Tax sales of land belonging to absentee original proprietors was authorized in 1783 permitting towns to levy a tax on all land in order to improve services and building roads. When the absentee land owners refused or failed to pay their tax, the land was auctioned or sold at vendue to collect the past tax. |
