Ledger of Captain John Norton, 1791-1816. Brown suede covers. Includes names of people and associated transactions. References to pottery and sales of earthenware, milkpans and pots as well as rum, wheat, potatoes, butchering, etc.
Administrative/Biographical History
John Norton owned the first pottery in Bennington, located on what is now Monument Avenue Extension. His account book includes sale of "ware" as well as bartered goods and services. There are two interesting accounts for Ishmeal Titus and Robert Westerfield in which instead of using the men's last name, he identified them as "Negro." Norton’s use of their race instead of their family names is indicative of the racism Black people dealt with in Vermont.
