Scope & Content |
Two letters from Elijah Dewey Waters in San Fransico, California to George Wadsworth Robinson of Bennington, Vermont. First dated February 4, 1859. Addresses Robinson as Brother (wives were sisters). Waters writes to inform Robinson of the difficulties of Edwin Robinson who was unable to find his fortune in the mountains and was reduced to poverty as his wife struggled with sickness and two children to raise. Both Waters and Edward Walbridge attempted to help him and eventually he found a job as a compositor on the daily times. Writes of the difficult treatment he has received at the hands of his brothers and his desire to return to Bennington. Mentions children who have already written as his reason for not writing further. Second dated February 15, 1870 . Waters writes that it has been seventeen years since he left Bennington for California with his family soon joining him. Although he loves California he retains his love for Old Bennington often thinking back on its streets and rivers. He then writes that Robinson's daughter Fanny (Maria Robinson) is visiting along with J. C. Haswell and his daughter. This leads Waters to write of the man (William P. Harrison) that Fanny is planning on marrying. Waters concludes that despite his previous divorce he is a fine man and will be a good and kind husband a view which Robinson's sister agrees with. (By sister he may be referring to his wife Eliza Ann Hinsdill Waters who was the sister of Robinson's wife Jane Emeline Hinsdill Robinson.) |
