Notes |
Bassett worked in the stores of G.B. Sibley and A. Drysdale before starting his own grocery business in partnership with W.C. Robinson in 1893. Robinson retired two years later, and Bassett continued with the grocery at 706 Main Street with moderate success. September 24, 1891 he married Ida Robinson, and on the occasion the Bennington Reformer noted that, "He is a model young man in every particular, which is saying much for one in these degenerate days." The marriage was reportedly an unhappy one and Hugh disappeared May 8,1905 never to return. His sister kept in touch with him as he traveled to British Columbia, and he was reportedly living in California at one point. In December of 1905 his wife was granted a divorce. He was declared legally dead in 1920 so that his ex-wife and two sons could inherit what remained of his estate. |
