Harwood was the Commanding General of the Vermont Militia from 1845-1854. Promotion from Brigadier General of the First Division of the state militia noted in Journal of the Senate October 20, 1848. He was listed as major of the First Bridgade, First Division, First Regiment as of June training 1840.
