Anthony Haswell came to Bennington, Vermont in 1783 and published the Vermont Gazette, one of the first newspapers in the state. His press also produced almanacs and books, notably Ethan Allen's deist publication, "Reason, the Only Oracle of Man." He was the first Postmaster General of Vermont. Active in politics, he supported the Democratic-Republican party and was one of the Jeffersonian printers imprisoned under the Sedition Act of 1798. |
