Notes |
Jane Leavitt Hunt (1801-1877) was the matriarch of an artistic family from Brattleboro, Vermont. She was born in Suffield, Connecticut and showed an aptitude for art at an early age, which was squashed by her father as frivolous and unladylike. She married Jonathan Hunt in 1820, an attorney who came from a distinguished Vermont family and made highly profitable land deals. He died of cholera in 1832 in Washington, DC while serving Vermont in Congress. Jane was left immense family wealth, which she used to finance the best education available for her five children. She chose to place her four sons in the best schools and art studios that Europe had to offer and toured the continent herself with her daughter, also named Jane. After returning to the United States, Jane settled in a New York City apartment with her daughter and continued to move in the highest social circles. She lived long enough to see her son William Morris Hunt become a famous painter and her son Richard Morris Hunt gain enormous success as an architect. Her other two sons also found success as a doctor and attorney/gentleman farmer. |
