Lewis Hurd joined a Connecticut regiment in the Revolutionary War in June 1776 and fought under George Washington on Long Island. After his six month enlistment expired, he joined the Continental forces. He was involved with the taking of Fort Montgomery, at Valley Forge in the winter of 1777 to 1778, at the Battle of Monmouth in 1778, the Battle of Stony Point in 1779, and was with Lafayette at the battle of Yorktown, where he was one of a party that scaled the walls of the forts during that siege. After the Revolution he settled in Sandgate, Vermont, where he was a devoted member of the Congregational Church, an advocate of temperance, and served the town many years as Treasurer, and at various times as Tax Collector, Lister, and Highway Surveyor. |
