Laurence Jackson Hyman, who created this photographic portrait of Jules Olitski, was the eldest son of Stanley Hyman and Shirley Jackson. He grew up in the Bennington College community in the 1950s, and in 1960, while still in high school, he took art classes at the College from such notable teachers as Paul Feeley and George Holt. He graduated from the College in 1964 as a split-divisional major in art and literature, and two years later, he became Bennington's Director of Public Relations and Publications. He went on to teach the first formal photography courses at the College, helping to establish the medium within the school's legendary visual arts program. |
