From the Bennington Banner May 15, 1969 Everett S. Lillie Dies at 73; Ex-Legislator, Farmer, Carpenter Everett Scrivens Lillie, 73, of South Stream Road, contractor, former Vermont Legislator and a leader in Farm Bureau, Grange and Masonic circles, died unexpectedly Wednesday afternoon of an apparent heart attack while working as a carpenter. He was rushed to Putnam Memorial Hospital by the Bennington Rescue Squad and died there shortly afterward. Mr. Lillie was born in Pownal Oct 1, 1895, a son of Frank and Helen (Scrivens) Lillie. His schooling had been received in Pownal and he married the former Margaret Thompson in Bennington on Feb 14, 1930 and they have always resided on the South Stream Road. Most of his life he had been self-employed and back in the 30's he had operated a large sawmill. A World War I Veteran, he had served the U.S. Army Transportation Corps. He belonged to American Legion Post 13. Mr. Lillie was a Republican and had served one term in the House of Representatives in 1966-67 from District 3-2. He was defeated in a re-election attempt. His activity and contribution in the Bennington County Farm Bureau, of which he was a former director, were well-known. He had been a long-time member there and was a director of 4-H Camp Ondawa at the time of his death. He and his family had been involved in many of the Farm Bureau projects. He was a past master of Bennington Grange. Besides belonging to the subordinate Grange, he also was affliated with the National Grange. A long-time member of the Vermont Maple Sugarmakers Association, his sugarbush was visited many times over the years by groups of schoolchildren and others. It will be recalled that a few years ago Mr. Lillie's maple syrup was judged the best in the state at the Farm and Home Show in Barre. For years Everett Lillie had been a town fence viewer. In his contracting business, he had constructed many buildings in the area. He was a member of the former Bennington Rural School board and had assisted in building the Beech Street School. A former officer in Mt. Anthony Lodge 13 F&AM, he was also a member of the Anciet Accepted Scottish Rite Masons. His other affliations had included the Northeastern Loggers Association and Bennington County Forest Association. Mr. Lillie possessed a dry wit and on occasion had performed in various home talent shows, mostly with his own family. Survivors besides his wife are one son, Everett D. (Timmy) Lillie; three daughters, Mrs. Anthony (Margaret) Paskiewicz of Shelton, Conn.; Miss Frances Lille and Mrs. Phillip (Virginia) McKenna; four grandchildren; one brother, Fred Lillie of Pownal; three sisters, Mrs. Lucy Quimby of Bennington, Mrs. Harry (Julia) Bahan of Shaftsbury and Mrs. Arthur (Marion) Percey of Cherry Plain, N.Y.; nieces and nephews. The family will be in attendance at Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home tonight from 7 t 9. The funeral will be held in the First Baptist Church, of which he was a member, on Friday at 2:30 pm. |
