Entered St. Mary's Episcopal Convent in Peekskill, New York in 1903 and took name Sister Mary Veronica. Sister Mary Veronica grew up within the cultured atmosphere of the beautifully furnished "Big House."This may explain why she ended up becoming an artist. She was one of the early twentieth century's most gifted ecclesiastical painters, creating images in a Medieval/Renaissance style with beautifully gilt backgrounds and frames. She also painted portraits in a unique waxy, crayon-like medium. After living an incredibly interesting life, most of which she spent as a nun in upstate New York, she bequeathed the contents of her studio to the Bennington Museum. |
