Notes |
Anna C. Park (1826-1914) of Bennington was a remarkable woman. She taught school in Louisiana, California, Hawaii, and the Micronesian islands in her younger years (she was the first female teacher in the high schools of San Francisco, California around 1849). Later in life, she traveled in Europe and lived a year in Greece. Park was the president of the Vermont Women's Christian Temperance Union from 1879 to 1881. She strongly opposed politicizing the issue of temperance. Whether or not she personally wanted the right to vote, Park realized that adding another controversial cause would not help the cause of temperance. In 1889 Park determined to withdraw from the WCTU and formed a splinter group, taking a number of Vermont members with her. |
