From the Bennington Banner October 24, 1966 George H. Plumb Civic Leader Dies With the death of George Hitchcock Plumb Sunday morning, Bennington lost one of its most dedicated public servants and respected citizens. The 59-year-old attorney and County Clerk died in Putnam Memorial Hospital where he had been since suffering a heart attack last week. Plumb was born Nov 14, 1907 in Whitingham, the son of George W. and Jennie (Hitchcock) Plumb. After graduating from Bennington High School, Plumb received degrees from Ohio State University and the Albany Law School in Albany, N.Y. He was admitted to the Vermont bar in 1935 and a short time later was elected state's attorney for Bennington County. He served in this position until 1943. During World War II, he was a chief petty officer with the Seabees in New Guinea and the Philippines. He became Bennington County Clerk on May 1, 1947 and had held the job ever since. He served as Bennington Village President from 1948 to 1951. In 1951 he was appointed to the New England Interstate Pollution Control Board by then Gov. Lee Emerson and was reappointed by succeeding governors. He had been a member of the state Fish and Game Board since 1956 until his resignation in 1965. Plumb was commission chairman during the last four years he served. He was past director and vice president of the Vermont Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs and was a member of local fish and game organizations. Plumb was treasurer of the Cooper Educational Scholarship Fund and trustee of the Olin Scott Fund. He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Louise Packard; his mother; a brother, Charles Plumb of Montpelier; and a number of nieces and nephews. Plumb will be buried in Park Lawn Cemetery following services at 2 pm. Tuesday at the Second Congregational Church. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Thomas Steffen, pastor. Friends may call at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home from 7 to 9 pm tonight. The family has asked that instead of flowers, donations be made to the Heart Fund. |
