Notes |
At the outbreak of the Civil War Edward Hastings Ripley was a student at Union College in Schenectady, New York. He enlisted as a private in May of 1862 and soon thereafter was commissioned Captain of Company B of the 9th Vermont Regiment. He was captured with his regiment at Harpers Ferry and paroled shortly after to spend the winter of 1862-63 in Chicago, Illinois. He served the rest of the war with distinction. He was promoted to Major March 20, 1863, Lt. Colonel on May 19, 1863 and Colonel on June 1, 1863. On August 1, 1864 he was brevetted to Brigadier General and assigned command of a brigade. In September 1864 he was wounded twice in the assault on Fort Harrison, Richmond, Virgina. As Commander of the First Brigade, Third Division, 24th Army Corps, he led the first federal troops into Richmond, Virginia. The retreating Confederates had set fire to much of the city and Ripley was quickly placed in supreme command. His first task was to quell the fires and subdue looting mobs, both of which were done with dispatch. His command was very able and fair and the city quickly returned to a calm state. General Ripley re-entered civilian life soon after the war and became well known in business and financial circles in Rutland and in New York. At the end of the war he entered his father's marble business with his brothers. Later, following his marriage to Amelia Dyckman Van Doren in 1878 he built Holland House on Fifth Avenue in New York City for the Van Doren heirs. He was founder and president of the Rutland Marble Savings Bank, vice-president of Rutland County National Bank, founder and director of the United States and Brazil Steamship Line, and built the Raritan Railroad in New Jersey. |
