Mount Anthony Observatory (Bennington, Vt.) |
Details |
George Wadsworth Robinson, owner of the Walloomsac Inn, decided to build an observation tower on top of Mount Anthony to help attract summer visitors to town. It was constructed in the summer of 1864, but unfortunately it was not able to survive the strong winds and toppled over six years later. It was replaced, but the replacement only lasted one year. The third tower survived until 1882 (its sides were never encased, so the wind blew through is instead of against it), but fell into disuse after the first couple seasons. During the years they survived, the towers were popular destinations for local picnics and out of town tourists alike. |
