The Bennington YMCA was founded in 1890s and met in various locations. The YMCA building on Main Street was built in 1906 and was a popular gathering place for the community's young people for many years. By the 1960s upkeep of the old and outdated building was becoming more than the organization could afford (the condition of the heating system was particularly bad). The building was sold in March of 1970 and demolished in September. At the time the YMCA was investing in a new building with an Olympic size pool at their property on Gage Street. Unfortunately they ran into serious funding issues and ended up dissolving amid a great deal of controversy so as to pass the assets on to the town to manage. |
