Description |
Six letters from Jonathan Robinson to his friend William Henry of Bennington. The letters discuss the increasing tension between the U.S. and Great Britain and the divided population for and against the war. An 1810 letter mentions the "violent" controversies that have included his Robinson relatives, and in 1809 notes the burning of the court house. The last letter discusses impediments to peace and was written from Washington one month before the British burned parts of the city on August 24, 1814. Other letters are to son-in-law O. C. Merrill, often addressed as "Dear Son" and signed "Your affectionate Father." In 1818 Jonathan expressed apprehension that the "Old Rev Bill will pass" and later asking Merrill's help to "lay an anchor to windward for something for Jonathan Henry," adding that "helping one will help us all" and "all are in want." There is also a draft of a letter to the President requesting help to replace the widely disliked Bennington post master Micah Lyman. HPM 844, 858, 869 |
