Description |
Black and white photograph by Daniel Farber, 1974, Gravestone of Hon. Nathan Clark,1792, Bennington, Vermont. Probable work of Zerubbable Collins of Shafstbury, Vermont. Rather tall headstone: upper one-third shows "O! Relentless Death!" over a wigged head on spread wings encircled with flowers and vines and diverse designs; the main inscription reads: "This stone is erected As a tribute of Respect to the Memory of The Hon. Nathan Clark Esq. Who died on the 8th of April 1792. In the seventy-fourth year of his age. His honors now are laid beneath the sod yet shall his memory breath a sweet perfume, And while in hope his soul ascends to GOD, shall bid the tear of virtue grace his tomb". |
