Description |
Two horses pulling a float with a man sitting in driver's seat, presumably for the 1919 Fourth of July parade, Bennington, Vermont. Banner on the side of the float with an American flag covering some of the words. What is visable says, "AND MEN SHALL HOLD THE MEMORY [DEAR] / OF THOSE WHO FOUGHT FOR FREEDOM HERE / AND GUARD THE RIGHTS THEIR VALOR WON, / WHILE THESE GREEN HILL-SIDES GREET THE SUN" On top of the float is another sign, that reads, "REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE". beside this is a gravestone with some of the letters covered by leaves. Appears to be George Oesterle, the first man from Bennington to be killed in action. Eagle plaque laying down at edge of float (2015.7.1). Drysdale's store in background, with curtains drawn over store windows. Poem is from the last verse of "The Battle of Bennington" by William Cullen Bryant. |
