Information |
This photograph was published on the front page of the Bennington Banner April 3, 1976 with the caption, "The United States this year will celebrate 200 years of independence. During almost half of those years Mrs. Phoebe Bump Moon has herself demonstrated the essence of the independent sprity. She celebrated her 90th birthday on April 2 and John Hubbard went out to her little home in a remote corner of West Shaftsbury to take her picture. She lives there alone with her dog, "Fannie," who refused to be in the picture, and a new cat she recently adopted. Mrs. Moon doesn't go out much these days, but for many years she was a familiar figure in North Bennington, where she would trudge on foot to peddle the berries she picked in summer. Phoebe Bump worked hard all her life and did it cheerfully without asking for help. These days, with the aid of friends and neighbors, her life is a little easier--a fact she accepts with the same equanimity with which she faced earlier burdens." |
