Information |
This portrait is an enlarged detail made from the 1848 daguerreotype of six old men (see A901). Crayon portraits were hybrid photograph/art made by using a solar enlarger to project a small negative onto a larger sheet of photo paper. The resulting image was very light, requiring an artist to retouch and strengthen the image with crayons, charcoal, and paints. In this case the photography was done by Hector Osterhoudt (his name is on the back) and the artistic elements were added by local artist James White. This is presumably the portrait mentioned in the 1/8/1908 Bennington Banner article, "A crayon portrait of Benjamin Harwood made by James White was loaned by Mrs. Mary Jane Waters Hicks, a descendant, to the Vermont committee, to be placed in the state building at the Jamestown exposition." Both Osterhoudt and White were actively working in Bennington from 1878 (when White had an accident that forced him into the art business full time) to 1882 (when Osterhoudt moved away). |
