Information |
On August 3-5, 1916 the Bennington Public Welfare Association put on a grand outdoor performance of William Shakespear’s play Julius Caesar at Clark’s Woods (in the area where Pageant Street is today, opposite the Country Club). They enlisted the help of professionals including Arthur Elliot (1855-1936), seen here as Brutus, and his wife Louise (1873-1937) who served as stage manager and also played the leader of the mob. The rest of the cast was made up of local talent, which by all accounts rose to the occasion. Reserved tickets were available for $1, or automobile space at the back for $5. A final free matinee performance was given Saturday afternoon free of charge in honor of the Elliots. There was some fear that Benningtonians would not fully appreciate the academic delights of William Shakespeare, but the production was a great success. |
