Information |
William A. Root registered the first car in 1910 in Bennington. Root owned a garage and sold Ramblers. After purchasing this one, he staged a publicity stunt in which four heavy men drove the new automobile through the snow up the hill to the Monument. The Bennington Banner claimed the snow was nearly four feet deep in sections and the combined weight of the passengers was 1,000 pounds! This more sedate photo shows his son Henry G. Root at the wheel in front of the Root home on South Street, now the town offices. |
