Sepia tone photograph of the model by John F. Weir for the Battle Monument first officially adopted. Statue of John Stark at top with hand on hilt of sword standing on rustic stone slab with three figures on three visible corners of base. "Stark" carved graffiti style into slab. Bas relief carvings below. |
Information |
Designed by Professor Weir of Yale University and was adopted by the Committee on Design, December 2, 1884. This design was abandoned in August, 1885 because of a storm of opposition and protest. Hon. E. J. Phelps, former Minister to Great Britain, was Chairman on the Committee on Design. General John G. McCullough was a member of the Committee. |
