Description |
Shirley Jackson and Stanley Hyman seated together, both looking at camera and smiling. Shirley holds a grey cat. Taken in the early 1960s by Clemens Kalischer, his stamp on back, negative number 103. |
Information |
Shirley Jackson loved cats: real ones, like the one she is holding in this photograph, and figurines, which she collected and were given to her over the years. Jackson kept multiple cats around the house as pets at all times. Her husband Stanley disliked cats immensely, and Shirley assured him she'd keep only two at a time. Despite her promise, a half dozen or more felines, usually solid grey or black, shared the family's quarters. Stanley had very poor vision and never caught sight of more than two at a time, so never caught on. |
