Description |
Postcard published by E.T. Griswold. Handcolored. No. 93. Caption printed on front, "DIMMICK TAVERN, 1762-1869. BENNINGTON, VT." Caption on back, "No. 93. Old Dimmick Tavern. Built in 1762 by Hendrick Schneider. In 1777 during the five-day encampment of the New England patriots, just prior to the Battle of Bennington, it was owned and managed by Col. Herrick, and officer in that engagement under Gen. Stark. It is therefore probable that the latter was entertained at the Inn during the time his headquarters were in the field immediately south. For the past seventy-five years it has been locally known as the "Dimmick Stand" or "Tavern", and is so designated on the granite boulder marker erected on the site in 1927, by the State of New Hampshire. It was destroyed by fire Nov. 10, 1869. (Reproduced from a painting by Pasquale Santo, from a drawing by W. G. Leake.)" One of a series of 200 postcards published by Griswold. Printed by the Albertype Co. |
