Image of wood frame house with stone wall in front and horse tied to tree in foreground. man standing in lawn in front of house. Photograph is not in sharp focus. Mounted on cream color board with typed label on reverse describing the history of the house: "Stood near present railroad station. Built by Captain Jehiel Hawley, Founder of Arlington, Vt. it was Arlington's first frame house. St. James parish...was started here by Capt. Hawley. Later it became, for two years, the Capitol of Vermont while owned and occupied by Governor Thomas Chittenden... The building was torn down in 1845." Stamp on back from Jehiel Hawley Studios with signature of Horace Mills Abrams. |
