Hand-colored postcard by E. T. Griswold showing the Walloomsac Inn, the first "Public House" and oldest Hotel in Vermont. Built in Old Bennington, VT by Captain Elijah Dewey, 1764. Postcard bears inscription on face "Walloomsac Inn. Historic Bennington, Vt." and "No. 58/COPYRIGHT BY/E. T. GRISWOLD,/BENNINGTON,VT./Hand-Colored." Reverse of card has text: "The first public House and oldest hotel in Vermont, built by Capt. Elijah Dewey in 1764./Here was prepared food for the maintenance of Stark's army before the battle of Bennington./Within its walls Dr. Channing, the 'Father of Unitarianism' peacefully passed away at sunset, Oct. 2, 1842./Ten landlords have successively and continuously catered to the public; the present proprietor, Walter H. Berry, for the past twenty-five years./It is a popular resort for summer visitors and tourists and is located within gun shot of many points of great historic interest./One of a series of 100 interesting Post Cards published by E.
