Information |
The Card Players is not a portrait, although we can be fairly certain Eddy worked from live models, as each figure is distinguished by individualizing details. Even though the work is unfinished, the story seems clear: while two men play cards, a third seems to offer assistance to one, while at the same time signaling to the other. With its narrative content and focus on a scene from everyday life, Card Players seems more closely allied with contemporaneous "genre" paintings of gamblers, storytellers, and musicians by William Sidney Mount, active in New York and Long Island during the mid 1800s. |
