Information |
George Witter was the eldest of four children born to William and Maria Witter of Colchester, Vermont. Their father died when George was only seven years old and the family was split up. George moved west as a young man. He joined the Co. M of the 12th Missouri Cavalry during the Civil War and served under Sheridan during the Shenandoah Valley campaign. At one point he had a horse shot from under him, and the resulting injury made it necessary for him to walk with a cane for the rest of his life. |
