Information |
In 1801 President Jefferson appointed William Jarvis to be charge d'affaires and consul to Portugal. Shortly after his arrival in Lisbon, a prince was born to the royal Portuguese household and the diplomatic corps was invited to celebrate the Christening celebration. After much consideration, Jarvis determined that the American naval uniform was considered official court dress, and ordered one to be specially made for the occasion by Carter's of London. |
