Information |
This document is a response published by the Green Mountain Boys to a March 1774 arrest warrant issued by Governor Tryon of New York for Ethan Allen and others. The warrant, issued in response to increasingly violent clashes between Allen’s group and New York officials, coincided with a proclamation that the area of the Grants was in a riotous condition. In late 1773 the Green Mountain Boys informally tried two New York officials, burning houses and removing the roof from another. In this letter Allen and his comrades outline the validity of their claims on the New Hampshire Grants and a history of the conflict. In the document, the Green Mountain Boys also challenged anyone disputing their land or attempting to arrest those in the warrant to violent action. Addressing anyone that might "insist upon killing [them]" they said, "come on,we are ready to take a Game of Scalping with them." Allen sent this copy of the letter to Micah Vail in Danby, Vermont, asking him to "Assist us in Humbling the Houghty Land Jobbers at New York." |
