Information |
Just two days after the Battle of Bennington, John Stark wrote a detailed account of the engagement, which was then published in Exeter, New Hampshire, the state’s capital during the Revolutionary War, on August 26, 1777. Stark describes the events leading up to the battle as well as his tactics during the action. The result of the August 16, 1777 conflict was an overwhelming American victory, having by Stark’s estimate killed over 200 of the enemy and captured 700 men as well as several cannons. This broadside also includes instructions that were given to Lt. Colonel Baum by General Burgoyne detailing a mission to secure 1300 or more horses for the Dragoons as well as cattle for food. Burgoyne encourages him to fight only when necessary, insisting upon the importance of the mission over fighting indiscriminately.Horses were not to be found in Bennington, but the town’s storehouse held large quantities of food and the grounds surrounding the storehouse were used as temporary grazing for cattle purchased by Isaac Tichenor as Assistant Commissary to the Continental Army. |
