Information |
As Grandma Moses entered her late seventies she found her vigorous routine of housework strenuous, and looked for a new domestic "occupation". In her autobiography she recalls her daughter Anna asking her to make a worsted picture saying "she had seen one she liked and thought I could do better. Well, I tried it and it was a success so I made many a picture and gave away many of them." The yarn pictures are similar in many ways to Moses paintings. Both use bright colors. She often created several slightly different versions of the same scene, as can be seen in The Shepherd Comes Home (catalog numbers 2003.137.1 and 2003.137.2). In addition, both yarn pictures and paintings were often inspired from printed sources such as photographs or prints. |
