Information |
Rudolph Goldsmith (1862-1905) composed the "General Stark" march in honor of the 1891 sesquicentennial of Vermont statehood and dedication of the Bennington Battle Monument. The piece was performed by a brass band at the celebration, and Goldsmith sold sheet music for piano printed on highly tinted "chromatic" paper. Goldsmith was born in Bennington in 1862 to German immigrants. He took an interest in music early in life and managed his own orchestra and led the Bennington Citizens Band and a glee club. He taught music for a time at the graded school and partnered with C.A. Wood to manage the Library Hall and later the Bennington Opera House. |
