Information |
This is a portrait of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, created by Pierre Zwick (1892-1964) using the words of the president’s Inaugural Address and declaration of policies. Pierre Zwick, was director of the Vermont state Fine Arts Project, a part of the New Deal Works Progress Administration and this image captures his deep admiration for FDR, architect of the New Deal. It took Zwick two and a half years to complete the portrait, and it includes around 26,000 letters. He presented the original to President Roosevelt in 1935, though it was returned to him. His friends who had watched the progress of the portrait over the years wanted copies, which prompted him to have prints made. This one was presented to the donor’s father John Zuryk of Stratford, Connecticut. Another was presented to the FDR Library in 1955, and is now in their collection. |
