Information |
William Bradford was the second of three generations to own and operate the Bradford Mill in Bennington. He built a fine home which is still standing on East Main Street, featuring fine formal gardens and a fountain (now gone). Along with his passion for horses, evident in this painting, he was an active member of the community, financing a fire station which still bears his name. The wealthy and socially elite during the last decrease of the 1800s (named the "Gilded Age" by Mark Twain) reveled in the pleasures of their time, including horse racing and pedigreed dogs. William Gerrit Van Zandt was the son of another society painter of Albany, Thomas Kirby Van Zandt. Both father and son were favorite artists of the upper classes of this area. |
